More Green Offices for Boston

America’s largest office building owner is seeking green certification for all its Boston office buildings, a move that will increase the city’s green-certified office supply by 50%. Equity Office Properties Trust will be retrofitting existing buildings to at least LEED Silver standard over the next several years, citing client demand as a key factor in its decision.

“We’re doing this from a social responsibility perspective, but it’s also become necessary to maintain tenants,” said Greg Shay, president of Boston operations for Equity Office, as quoted in Boston.com. “It’s gotten to the point where not taking action is somewhat foolish.”

The company owns more than 700 million square feet of office space in metropolitan areas across the nation, and executives say the Massachusetts retrofits could be the beginning of a national effort.
