Go Green Fresno County

Fresno County, California, launches a comprehensive climate change program based on improving air quality and saving money.

It started with air quality. I remember the day last year when I walked into my assistant’s office and said “Let’s figure out what would happen to our air quality if we removed ‘X’ amount of cars from the road during rush hour. I think it would make a difference.” A year later, we have Go Green Fresno County, a seven part program.

Why air quality and not climate change?

Air quality is visible here in California’s San Joaquin Valley but climate change, not so much. As people well-versed in environmental stewardship, we know climate change comes from a combination of choices we as a society make. I know my paper cup of coffee at the local coffee shop tells a tale that is about more than java. Its tale begins in a forest and consumes energy and natural resources and human energy and vehicle power and plastic and on and on until it winds up in my hand. But what is my paper cup of coffee to the average Joe? A cup of Joe.
