The Story of Stuff

This 20 minute video by Annie Leonard is a phenomenon. An award winner, millions have seen it, and you ought to add yourself to that number if you haven't yet. Entertaining and sharp, combining Annie's winning delivery with outstanding graphics, it gets across loads of information about stuff: where it comes from, where it goes, and what happens along the way. Going deeper, it reveals the disturbing vision behind consumerism, planned obsolescence and short term thinking. As she says, it didn't just happen. The money quote from Victor LeBeau: "our enormously productive economy... demands that we make consumption our way of life, that we convert the buying and use of goods into rituals, that we seek our spiritual satisfaction, our ego satisfaction, in consumption... we need things consumed, burned up, replaced and discarded at an ever-accelerating rate." There's more. If you ever wondered how consumption became all-consuming, this will clear it up.
